The Medicare Insurance Program is for:

  • People age 65 or older
  • People under age 65 with certain disabilities
  • People of all ages with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant)

Medicare has 4 Parts:

  1. Part A – Hospital Insurance. Helps cover inpatient care in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. Part A also helps cover hospice care and some home health care. Most people don’t pay a premium for Part A because they or a spouse already paid for it through their payroll taxes while working.

  2. Part B – Medical Insurance. Helps cover doctor’s services and outpatient care. It also covers some services that Part A doesn’t cover like physical and occupational therapists and some home health care when they are medically necessary. Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B.

  3. Part C – Medicare Advantage Plans. These plans are offered by private health insurance companies that are contracted with Medicare. The plans will provide you with coverage for both Part A and Part B benefits. Some plans also offer prescription drug coverage. In most of these plans, generally, there are extra benefits and lower copayments than in the Original Medicare Plan.

  4. Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage. This coverage may help to lower prescription drug costs.  This coverage is insurance.  Most people will pay a monthly premium. Private companies provide the coverage and like other insurance; if you decide not to enroll in this drug plan when first eligible you may have a penalty to pay if you decide to enroll at a later date.
